Our History

The Church of the Lutheran Brethren of America came into being as the result of a spiritual awakening that swept over a large territory of the Midwest just before the turn of the 20th century.

These new converts began to live their lives with great purpose. For them, church life took on new meaning. They were no longer content only with Sunday worship services. Believers began to meet for Bible study and prayer. They met in homes because they hungered for the word of God and the fellowship of belivers.

Scattered groups began studying the Scriptures and many began to ask questions about how they should live their lives as Christians, what Scripture had to say about the nature of the church, and what were their responsibilities as a body of believers.

These convictions led to the organization of several independent congregations founded on Biblical principles rather than on traditions or elaborate ceremonies.
Bethany Lutheran Brethren Church in Colfax was one the first congregations established by the Lutheran Brethren in 1899.

Since its inception, many changes have taken place at Bethany, but we have not swayed from our mission of worshiping Jesus Christ, proclaiming God’s Word, and reaching out to the world in His name.
